When a patient reached out to Express Scripts® Pharmacy in the middle of the night feeling “overwhelmed” with recent changes to her medications, registered pharmacist Brandon Fahs was there to support her.

The patient was recently prescribed torsemide, a medication used to treat fluid retention (edema), and she was concerned about potential interactions with her other medications, supplements and her atrial fibrillation diagnosis.

Fahs let the patient know that one of her medications, venlafaxine, could potentially interact with torsemide, causing her blood sodium levels to get too low. He advised her on the importance of having her doctor do routine monitoring of her sodium and magnesium levels to ensure proper balance.

Taking the time to answer all questions

She also had questions about the timing of taking her torsemide. Fahs suggested taking it in the morning to separate it from her levothyroxine, allowing for better absorption. Also, since torsemide is a diuretic (water pill), taking it further from the evening hours would mean fewer late-night trips to the bathroom.

The patient felt relieved and grateful after their discussion, saying Fahs “went above and beyond” and “provided excellent advice.”

Fahs, who has been working at Express Scripts® Pharmacy since 2003 and typically works overnight, said he’s especially understanding when patients call, knowing that something is keeping them up at night.

“Whether it’s a mom who’s panicking about her kid or a spouse who can’t get ahold of a doctor, I focus on each person’s concerns,” said Fahs.

Having originally worked in a busy retail pharmacy, he understands what a privilege it is to be able to focus on one patient at a time.

“I really value and appreciate taking the time I need with each patient,” Fahs said. “And when you do get a patient that connects with you, it’s so rewarding.”
